What's happened to the great BBC tradition of unbiased, even-handed reporting?

Radio 4 reporter Jonty Bloom, who interviewed local traders at the recent Bishop’s Stortford Means Business Exhibition failed to broadcast their views because they were - in his words - unrelentingly optimistic!

Clearly for them good news was no news. What they wanted to hear was wailing and gnashing of teeth – as if the country hasn't been in sackcloth and ashes long enough.

We're not pretending there’s not still a way to go before we climb out the recession, but what’s needed now is a healthy dose of drive and enthusiasm - just what the BSMSB exhibition was designed to deliver, and towards which good progress has been made - hence the optimism. It's only a pity that the once impartial BBC wasn't listening. Lord Reith, the great champion of free speech, must be turning in his grave.
